    How it works

What a 230V rotary phase converter does

A 230V single-phase to three-phase rotary phase converter takes standard 230V (also called 220V or 240V) single-phase power from the utility and generates a true three-phase 230V output for industrial equipment. The rotary design uses an idler generator to produce a real third leg of AC power — not a synthetic or approximated waveform — so it runs motor loads at full rated horsepower, including hard-starting equipment like air compressors, CNC machines, milling machines, lathes, elevators, well pumps, and rooftop HVAC units.

Unlike a static phase converter (which only runs a three-phase motor at about two-thirds of its rated power and is limited to light-duty use) or a VFD (which is normally used for one motor and variable-speed control), a rotary phase converter can run multiple machines at once, handle inductive and resistive loads, and start heavy motors without derating.

    1. 230V single-phase utility serviceTwo hot legs from the incoming panel (220V, 230V, or 240V nominal).
    2. Rotary converter and TEFC idlerThe idler generator spins up and creates a real third leg of AC power.
    3. 230V three-phase outputBalanced three-phase power goes to your industrial equipment.

    Sizing

How to size a 230V phase converter

For most standard applications, size the converter at 2× the horsepower rating of your largest motor. That covers starting-current inrush and leaves headroom for additional loads on the same converter. For hard-starting equipment such as air compressors, HVAC compressors, and high-inertia loads, use 2.5× the largest motor's HP, or choose one of our NLA AutoLink models designed for those loads.

Not sure what you need? Use our phase converter sizing wizard, read the full sizing guide, or call 866-559-4250 — we've been sizing these for over 50 years.

    Standard loads

Lathes, mills, CNC equipment, pumps, and general shop equipment. Example: a 10 HP largest motor points to a 20 HP converter.

    2.5×

    Hard-starting loads

Air compressors, HVAC compressors, and high-inertia loads. Example: a 10 HP compressor points to a 25 HP converter or an NLA AutoLink model.

Total running load must remain within the converter's rated capacity. For final sizing, confirm motor nameplate information with Phoenix.

    FAQ

Frequently asked questions about 230V phase converters

Will a 230V phase converter run my 220V or 240V equipment?

Yes. In North America, 220V, 230V, and 240V are the same nominal voltage — utility voltage varies slightly by region and time of day. A 230V rotary phase converter runs equipment labeled for any of these voltages without any modification.

How much does a 230V phase converter cost?

Our 230V rotary phase converters start at $749 for a 3 HP GP3NL and scale up to $13,034 for a 100 HP GP100NL. Auto-Zoned dual-power models start at $3,240. See individual product pages for current pricing and available discounts.

    Do I need a 230V or a 480V phase converter?

If your single-phase utility service is 230V (typical for residential and light-commercial buildings), and your equipment runs on 230V three-phase, you need a 230V-to-230V converter — this collection. If your equipment runs on 460V or 480V three-phase, you need a 230V-to-460V phase converter with a step-up transformer.

How long does a rotary phase converter last?

A properly sized and installed Phoenix rotary phase converter routinely runs 20+ years. The generator (idler motor) is covered by our lifetime warranty — most competitors offer only 2–5 years.

Can I run multiple machines on one 230V phase converter?

Yes — that's one of the biggest advantages of a rotary phase converter over a VFD. Size the converter for 2× the largest motor's HP, and you can run additional smaller motors on the same converter as long as the total running load stays within the converter's rated capacity.

How fast can I get one?

All in-stock 230V rotary phase converters ship within 1–2 business days from our nearest warehouse. Freight delivery to your location typically takes 3–7 business days depending on location.

    Do you offer sizing help?

Yes — free. Call 866-559-4250 and speak with a phase-conversion specialist. We've been sizing these for over 50 years, and we'll spec the right converter for your specific equipment, voltage, and installation.
