AutoStart for Phoenix Phase Converters

Phoenix Phase Converters offers an optional AutoStart feature for select converter models. AutoStart automatically starts the phase converter when you energize any connected three-phase load — and shuts it down automatically after a preset delay when all loads are turned off. This eliminates the need to manually start the converter before using your equipment.

How AutoStart Works

When AutoStart is installed:

1. The converter's disconnect switch is left in the closed (ON) position.
2. When you energize any connected three-phase machine (turn on a light switch, press a machine's power button), the AutoStart circuit detects the load and automatically starts the converter idler motor.
3. After a short startup delay (typically 2–5 seconds for the idler to reach speed), power is applied to your machine.
4. When all connected loads are off, the AutoStart timer counts down (typically 5–10 minutes) and then shuts off the converter idler automatically.

• Convenience: You never have to walk to the converter location to start or stop it — just turn on your machine and the converter starts automatically.
• Energy savings: The idler motor doesn't run when no equipment is in use — only when needed.

AutoStart vs. Always-On Operation

In standard operation, most users leave the converter running all day during work hours and shut it off at the end of the day. AutoStart is most valuable when:

• The converter is in a separate building from the equipment
• Equipment use is infrequent or unpredictable
• You want to reduce standby energy consumption
• Multiple people share a shop and converter startup is inconvenient
