Match the converter's rated horsepower to the largest motor you'll start. For a typical machine shop with one 5 HP lathe, a 10 HP rotary phase converter is recommended (2x rule for hard-starting loads). For multiple motors running simultaneously, size to the largest single motor plus 50% of the sum of the others. Use our sizing calculator for a precise recommendation in under a minute.
Yes. 230V three-phase output is compatible with equipment labeled 220V, 230V, or 240V — the NEMA tolerance is ±10%. Most older industrial machines marked "240V 3-phase" run perfectly on a 230V rotary phase converter. If your equipment is labeled 460V/480V, you'll need either a 460V converter or a step-up transformer.
Roughly 4 to 5 amps of single-phase 230V input per HP of converter capacity. A 10 HP converter typically needs a 50A single-phase breaker; a 20 HP needs around 100A. The exact draw depends on load — see the specification sheet on each product page for nameplate values.
Yes, with our NL-series. The NL line uses a precision-balanced TEFC generator and built-in voltage monitor that delivers balanced three-phase suitable for CNC controls, servo drives, and inverters. For sensitive electronics we recommend sizing one tier larger than the motor HP and consulting our technical support team before purchase.
A rotary phase converter generates true balanced three-phase using a rotating idler motor — best for full-load continuous duty, CNCs, and multiple machines. A static phase converter only assists motor starting and reduces the motor to ~67% of rated HP — suitable for occasional, single-machine use. A digital phase converter uses solid-state electronics to synthesize three-phase — more expensive, quieter, but limited HP range. See our full comparison.
Yes. Every Phoenix Phase Converter on this page is designed, assembled, and tested at our Phoenix, Arizona facility. Generators are American-made cast iron TEFC units. The line carries a lifetime warranty on the generator and a 3-year warranty on electrical components.
In-stock NL-series converters typically ship within 1–2 business days. LTL freight transit time is 3–7 business days depending on destination. Most orders include free curbside freight delivery to commercial addresses in the continental US. Liftgate service is available at checkout.
No special outlet — most 230V rotary phase converters hard-wire directly into a single-phase 230V circuit breaker. Smaller units (5–10 HP) can use a NEMA L6-30 or 6-50 plug if you prefer flexibility. We include detailed installation instructions and wiring diagrams with every unit, and our wiring diagram guide covers every common motor configuration.
