Which 40 HP Phase Converter Should I Buy?
Most shop and CNC owners want the GP40NL (40 HP rotary, 230V→230V). It's our best-selling model in this size — true balanced three-phase power for any single largest motor up to 40 HP, plus running multiple smaller machines off the same converter.
Step up to PL series if you have CNC machines, welders, or anything with sensitive electronics — tighter voltage balance for precision loads.
Choose NLT or PLT (Transformer Package) if your equipment needs 460V three-phase but you only have 230V single-phase service. The transformer is built into the package — one purchase, factory-matched.
Pick the GP40NH only if you already have 460V single-phase incoming service. This is rare — most buildings have 230V.
The Digital Static (RD840) is the cheapest option, but only powers about 2/3 of motor rated load and only one motor at a time. Don't use for CNC, welders, or anything sensitive — get the rotary instead.
AutoStart (ASL) adds remote/automatic start — useful if your converter is in a separate building or you want push-button operation.

What can a 40 HP rotary phase converter run?
A 40 HP rotary phase converter is sized to run any single three-phase motor up to 40 HP, or multiple smaller motors as long as the largest is no more than 40 HP. For CNC machines or motors with high inrush, we recommend matching the converter to roughly 2× the spindle motor HP.
What's the difference between a 40 HP rotary and a VFD?
A rotary phase converter produces true balanced three-phase sine wave power and runs multiple machines off one unit through a sub-panel — same as utility three-phase. A VFD only powers one motor at a time, varies its speed, and produces non-sinusoidal output that can damage CNC controllers or sensitive electronics. For multi-machine shops or CNC, the rotary is the right choice.
What size single-phase service do I need for 40 HP?
A 40 HP Phoenix rotary draws roughly 200–280 amps continuous on the single-phase side at 230V. You should have at least a 60-amp single-phase circuit available. Call us with your panel info if you're not sure — sizing the input correctly is critical.
Do I need a transformer with my 40 HP converter?
Only if your equipment requires 460V three-phase and you have 230V single-phase incoming. In that case, choose the GP40NLT or GP40PLT Transformer Package — it includes a properly matched 3 KVA WYE autotransformer pre-wired with the rotary. If your equipment is 230V three-phase (most common), no transformer is needed.
What's included with my 40 HP converter?
Every Phoenix rotary ships fully assembled with the idler/generator, control panel, and operations manual. Cast-iron frame, totally enclosed fan-cooled (TEFC) motor, corrosion-resistant hardware, stainless steel connection plate. You provide single-phase incoming wire, sized to local code, and any output sub-panel.
How fast does it ship?
Most 40 HP units ship in 1–3 business days from our Arizona factory. Expedited shipping available — call to coordinate.
