Tier 3 Dealer Free Model Upgrade

Tier 3 Free Upgrade · Phoenix, AZ

The Tier 3 Free Phase Converter Upgrade Explained

Your customer pays the NL price. You ship a PL, NLA, or DualZone. That's the Tier 3 free upgrade — a $400–$1,200 spec bump that Phoenix absorbs and you use to close the deal.

What the upgrade actually is

Same horsepower rating, better model, no added cost to the customer

The Tier 3 free upgrade lets a Phoenix dealer quote and bill the customer for an NL-class rotary converter, then order and ship an equivalent-HP PL, NLA, or DualZone at the dealer's invoice price. Phoenix absorbs the price spread. The customer receives a converter that is one tier above what they paid for — bigger capacity, tighter voltage balance, or two independent zones depending on the upgrade path chosen.

This is not a bait-and-switch. The customer is always told which model they're receiving. The pitch — and it's a strong one on the close — is that because you're a Phoenix dealer, you can put the better unit on their floor for the price they budgeted. It is the single most effective close we've seen a dealer run in the field.

The four models

NL vs. PL vs. NLA vs. DualZone at a glance

Model What it is Typical HP Best for Approx. retail premium over NL
NL Baseline rotary phase converter 3–20 HP General-purpose 3-phase loads on single-phase utility — compressors, blowers, simple machine tools — (baseline)
PL Larger-capacity rotary with higher surge headroom 5–40 HP Heavier starts, multi-motor shops, HVAC rooftops, grain and feed operations +$400–$700
NLA Precision rotary with tighter voltage balance for sensitive drives 5–25 HP CNC mills and lathes, Fanuc/Siemens/Haas controls, welders with inverter boards +$600–$900
DualZone Two independent 3-phase zones from one cabinet Two zones, 5–20 HP each Multi-machine shops, 2-bay garages, operations running a mill and a lathe on separate circuits +$900–$1,200
What the customer actually feels

The $400–$1,200 spec bump translates to real shop-floor outcomes

NL → PL gives real starting headroom

A PL handles harder motor starts — a loaded compressor, a cold-morning blower — without voltage sag. Customers notice the first time a big motor starts cleanly instead of dipping the lights.

NL → NLA protects sensitive drive electronics

An NLA's tighter voltage balance dramatically reduces the 'phantom alarms' that generic rotaries throw on Fanuc, Siemens, and modern Haas controls. For CNC customers, this is the model that actually works.

NL → DualZone retires a second converter

A shop running a mill and a lathe from two generic rotaries replaces both with a single DualZone cabinet. One commissioning, one breaker panel conversation, half the floor space.

The customer keeps what they budgeted

Because the upgrade is free, the customer's check stays the same. You're delivering a spec improvement, not a price increase — which means no quote revision, no second approval round.

“The free upgrade is the closest thing to a silver bullet we've built. Dealers who pitch it correctly close in the room.”

— Phoenix dealer success team
How dealers pitch it

A one-line pitch that re-frames the entire conversation

The pitch is: 'Because we're a Phoenix dealer, you get the NLA for the price of the NL.' That's it. You are not discounting. You are not cutting into your margin. You are handing the customer a spec improvement because of who you are, and that framing moves the conversation from price to fit.

Dealers who report the best close rates lead with the upgrade on CNC and multi-machine shop deals, where the NLA or DualZone materially changes the install outcome. On light-commercial and residential deals, the NL → PL upgrade still plays well as an 'I'll send you the bigger one' finisher.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Does the customer know they're getting an upgraded phase converter?

Yes. The dealer always tells the customer which model is being shipped. The Tier 3 free upgrade is a benefit you hand the customer openly — it's part of the pitch, not a hidden swap. The customer signs off on the model before you place the order.

Can I pick which upgrade path (PL, NLA, or DualZone) I ship on each sale?

Yes, as long as the upgrade is an equivalent or higher horsepower class. A customer who ordered a 10 HP NL can be upgraded to a 10 HP PL, a 10 HP NLA, or a DualZone with a 10 HP zone — whichever actually fits the install.

How much is the free upgrade worth to my customer in dollars?

Approximately $400–$1,200 per unit, depending on horsepower and which model you choose. NL → PL is typically $400–$700 of customer-perceived value; NL → NLA is $600–$900; NL → DualZone can reach $1,200.

Do I need to order the upgraded model ahead of time or is it automatic?

You order the upgraded model directly through your Tier 3 dealer account. You're billed at your dealer price on the upgraded unit, but the customer pays you whatever they agreed to for the NL. Phoenix absorbs the spread — it's the core Tier 3 benefit.
